Abstract It has been demonstrated that disease activity in rheu- atoid arthritis (RA) is reflected in acute phase (AP) pro- tein concentrations.Glycoproteins function as acute phase reactants, mani- ~ festing quantitative plasma alterations in association with multiple stressful conditions. This work is an attempt to study the changes in serum glycoprotein pattern in RA and try to correlate these chan- ges with the discase activity and response to treatment. Three major groups have been studied in this work: I- Rheumatoid arthritis group: Thirty-six patients (33 women and 3 men) with classi- cal or definite RA were selected according to American Rheumatism Association criteria (Ropes et al., 1958). Their age ranged between 16-66 years, and the duration of their disease ranged between 1-15 years. They were classified into: a) 29 patients with positive IgM rheumatoid factor (RF +ve). b) 7 patients with negative IgM rheumatoid factor (RF -ve). From the RA group 10 patients were selected to be in- vestigated again after treatment for 6 weeks in average. |
