Abstract

The presence of carotene in the blood was early reported. An increase in carotene level in blood has been reported clinically in several diseases and particular attention has been called to its presence in patients with diabetes mellitus as well as thyroid dysfunction. Carotenemia present can be attributed to the accumulation of carotene in the liver and inability of this organ to convert it to Vitamin A • It has been earlier observed by several research workers that thyroid gland plays an important role in the metabolism of carotene as well as Vitamin A. Desiccated thyroid increases the absorption of carotene from the intestine, whereas thiouracil decreases the absorption ( Came and Goodwin 1949). Thyroxine is necessary for intestinal conversion of carotenoid pigments into Vitamin A , stimulate Vitamin A absorption and storage in the liver (Came et al., 1957).Since both diabetic state and thyroid dysfunctionhave been shown to affect carotenes and Vitamin A metabolism, this thesis was undertaken to study the biochemical changes of carotenoid pigments and Vitamin in cases of hyperthyroidism and diabetes mellitus, and its possible relationship with plasma lipid pattern.
