Abstract

This work aims at assessing the role of different imaging modalities in evaluation of different paranasal sinus diseases. Four hundred 400 patients (230 males and 170 females) complaining of symptoms related to paranasal sinuses or upper respiratory tract, were examined with different imaging modalities. The patients were classified into 6 pathologic groups; inflammatory lesion (260 patients), tumour lesions (63 patients), anatomical variations (50 patients), traumatic lesions (21 patients), iatrogenic lesions (4 patients) and congenital lesion (2 patients). After thorough clinical and focal examination; the patients were subjected to the following: 1- Conventional radiography for all patients. 2-CT for all patients. 3- MRI for 64 cases with tumours and tumour-like lesions, as well as, cases with complicated infection. 4- Angiography for 6 cases with angiofibromas. The commonest anatomical variants are concha bullosa in 60 % and deviated nasal septum in 40% of the studies cases. Conventional radiography detects only 1 cases of deviated nasal septum and 11 cases of maxillary hypoplasia. On CT scan, these cases were 20 and 23 cases, respectively.
