Abstract , This study aimed at evaluating the visual results and complications of phacoemulsification procedure using clear corneal incision, divide and conquer technique and implantation of foldable acrylic PC-IOL in comparison to the planned extracapsular cataract extraction using limbal incision, nucleus expression. and implantation of hard PMMA PC-IOL with special interest in the surgically induced astigmatism and the effect on corneal endothelium. selected from cases of senile cataract, 104 eyes were prepared for phacoemulsification and other 62 eyes were prepared for planned extracapsular cataract extraction. The mean age of the two groups was comparable. The unaided and aided visual acuity was better in the phaco group with 48.9% of eyes having unaided visual acuity of 6: 12 or better three months postoperatively in contrast to 26.7% in the extracapsular group. Also, 87.8% of the phaco group had aided visual acuity of 6:12 or better after three months as opposed to 76.7% of the extracapsu lar group. |
