Abstract

Endogenous serum and ascites nitric oxide (NO) levels were found to evaluated increased in cirrhotic patients with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP). The usefulness of serum and ascites NO levels in the diagnosis and determination of the prognosis of cirrhotic patients with SBP requires needs further investigation. The aim of this study was to assessment the role of ascitic fluid and serum NO levels measurement in the diagnosis of SBP and!in determining the predisposition of cirrhotic patients to develop SBP. And the incidence of a rare microorganisms such as Brucella melitensis as a cause ofSBP in cirrhotic patients. This study was carried out on 56 patients, suffering from liver cirrhosis with and without SBP, who were recruited at random from out and inpatients clinics of tropical medicine unite at Mansoura University Hospital. Diagnosis of SBP was based on the following criteria: ascites fluid polymorphonuclear cell (PMN) count> 2501 mm3 and a compatible clinical picture (abdominal pain and! or fever and! or unexplained encephalopathy). The possibility of secondary peritonitis was excluded in all patients (Garcia-Tasao et a/; 1998). There were divided into the following groups representing different etiological varieties of liver cirrhosis and ascites: Group 1: patients with SBP and schistosomiasis represent 12 patients (21.4%), there were 8 males (66.7%) and 4 females (33.3%), their age ranged from (45-70) years with mean age was (55:1:9.53) years.
