Abstract The aim of this work is to study the result of interlocking nail in treatment of femoral shaft fracture nonunion. Thirty two patients with femoral shaft fracture nonunion were treated by interlocking nail between January 95 - October 2000. Males were more affected than females with the ratio of 4: 1. The age of patients ranged from 17 to 49 years with an average of thirty three years. Most of the fractures caused by high velocity trauma The duration of nonunion prior to treatment ranged from 10 month to 4 years with an average of 20 month. Nonunion affecting the mid-shaft were the commonest. Iliac bone graft was done in six cases. Eight cases were treated by closed technique, while 24 cases were treated by semi-closed technique. The result of closed nailing was better than that of open nailing. Static locked nailing was done in 26 cases and dynamic nailing in 6 cases. Residual shortening was seen In all cases ranged from 0.5 to 2.5 ern. 10° varus deformity occurs in only one case and ISo valgus occurs in another case with no loss of Knee monon in all cases. No significant relation was found between the age ofparicnts or level of nonunion and period of union All cases obtained bonv union within an average nil h~ WCl’Ks From our results we conclude that interlocking nailing ISl useful treatment for femoral shaft fracture nonunion. It facilitate weight bearing and gives a quick recovery from nonunion. possible the closed technique should be considered in all cases. |
