Abstract

This study included ninety patients of either sex. Their ages ranged from 30-60 years.
They were classified into six groups, each comprised 15 patients. Half of the patients (groups 1, 11, Ill) received thiopentone 5 mg! kg for induction, and the other half (groups lV, V, VI) received propofol 2mg!kg. Patients in groups I and IV received no premedication. Patients in group 11 and V received sufentanil 0.1 ug/kg IV. Patients in group III and VI received nifedipine J 0 mg/kg sublingual.
Intubation was facilitated in all patients by suxamethoniul11 1.5 mg/kg.
Anesthesia was maintained by halothane 0.5- 1 % and 70% nitrous oxide in oxygen with controlled ventilation.
The heart rate, mean blood pressure, and intraocular pressure were measured before any medication as a basal value. Then it was measured 20 minutes after premedication, thiopentone or Propofo!, succinylcholine, and at 1,2,3, and 5 minutes after intubation.
From our work, it was found that nifedipine and sufentanil prevented dle increase in lOP that occurred after succinylcholine, laryngoscopy, and Intubation. The combination of sufentanil and propofol was found to crease the JOP below the basal values.
