Abstract

This experimental study was carried out to evaluate the possible therapeutic effects of melatonin in rheumatoid arthritis and its interaction with some NSAIDs. The study was carried out in rats in which rheumatoid like arthritis were induced experimentally by intradermal injection of a total volume of 0.1 ml of cold emulsion consisted of native type II collagen and complete Freund’s adjuvant. A booster dose was given after 3 weeks. Rats were divided into 2 main groups: Group A: Non-arthritic group: Each animal in this group was received 0.5 ml saline solution and served as non-arthritic control group. • Group B: Arthritic group: This group was subdivided into equal 8 sub groups each comprised 10 animals as follows. * Group 1: each animal in this group received saline for 15 days and served as arthritic control. * Group 2: [Melatonin treated arthritic group] each animal in this group was received melatonin [lmg/kg] as single daily dose for 15 days. * Group 3: [Aspirin treated arthritic group] each animal was received Aspirin [200mg/kg/day] for 15 days. * Group 4: [lndomethacin treated arthritic group] .
