Abstract Nosoconlial infection is the infection acquired in hospital within 72 hours of admission. The majority of these infections are of moderate clinical importance but tnay cause distressing morbidity, Lengthen hospital stay and increase costs. they are one of the major problems all over the world. when epidemic occur in hospital, strict typing methods for organisnls causing this out break are needed. The aim of this study is to deternline the Inagnitude of the problem of nosocomial infection and to identify the microorganisms causing this nosocomial infection in the NICU of Mansoura University Hospital. We aimed also to identify the source of infection and the predisposing factors, so as to reach a recommendation to reduce the rate of nosocomial infection and to prevent further out breaks. i total of 515 samples were taken for culture from neonates who were admitted to the unite without showing evidence suggasting infections and 180 swabs taken from environment and staff. (120 swabs from environnlent and 60 swabs from medical staff). These samples were transported to the Microbiology laboratories at the Microbiology Diagnostics and Infection control unit (MDICU), Microbiology Departnlent, where satuples were cultured on the different bacteriogical media according to the type of sample.
