Abstract The rapid and reliable detection of microorganisms is one of the most important duties of a clinical microbiology laboratory Recently, an increasing number of automated,, continuous monitoring blood culture instruments have been developed and serve as an incubator, agitator and detection device. The instrument incubates blood culture bottles at 351C with I shaking back and front intermittently (in VITAL), orbitally at 160 rpm ontineously (in BACTEC 9050) and contineous monitoring to detect microbial growth. Based on the fluorescence technology, the intensity of light emitted through the bottle wall is measured every interval of time (I 5 min in VITAL & I 0 min. in BACTEC). Significent reduction (VITAL) or elevation (BACTEC) in the fluorescence indicate a positive bottle. the automated blood culture systems can detect microorganisms in small volume of specimens within few hours and could be applied to CSF and fluid aspirates (Peritoneal, pleural, articular) that involve a low concentration of bacteria. |
