Abstract Yersinia enterocolitica (Y. enterocolitica) which is a member of the genus Yersinia, have been reported as a pathogenic organism affecting human and animals. Y. enterocolitica is a cold adapted facultative anaerobic Gram negative nonspore forming coccobailli. The incidence of Y. enterocolitica have been increased in recent years but it is unclear wheather this is because of a true increase of the disease or because of greater awarness and improvement in the diagnostic techniques. Infection by Y. enterocolitica is transmitted by ingestion of contaminated food as milk and meat, contaminated water supplies,, contact with infected animals and transfusion of infected blood. In infant and young children, the Y.enterocolitica infection usually manifested as gastroenteritis which varies in its severity from a few loose stool motions /day to a fuli-ninant enterocolitis with ulcerative lesions while in older children,, the main symptom is abdominal pain in the right lower quadrant and even pseudoappendicitis syndrome. |
