Abstract

The present work has been undertaken to evaluate the hyperamylasemia detected in patients with diabetic ketoacidosis admitted to Mansoura University Hospital. Clinical, biochemical and imaging studies have been carried out on 40 ketoacidotic patients admitted to hospital and lOnon-ketotic diabetics. Hyperamylasemia has been detected in 52.5% of the patients with diabetic ketoacidosis. Fifty-seven percent of these hyperamylasemic ketoacidotic patients had also increased lipase activity. So, it is likely that, exocrine pancreas is a major contributor to the increased amylase activity in serum of patients , with diabetic ketoacidosis. However, none of the patients had an evidence of acute pancreatitis. The pathogenic mechanism leading to increased concentrations of serum amylase in these patients remains obscure.
