Abstract

The existence of an ’’Epidermal growth factor’’ was first ected as an incidental observation by Stanley Cohen (1983) during e course of studies on the nerve growth factor and it is found to be single polypeptide chain of 53 amino acid residues, and has an electric point at pH 4.6 (Cohen, 1986). Epiden-nal growth factor is a biologically active polypeptide_ liat perform hormone like functions related to.,,proA,, All members of EGF felinely of amidogens share two structural ,I features, they contain a highly conversed 36 to 40 amino acid motif, ,,containing six cysteines that fink internally to produce three peptide loops (carpenter and Wahl; 1990). The epidermal growth factor SLIperfamilY include transforming growth factor alpha; arnphiregulin lieparin binding EGF-, cripto; schwannoma derived growth factor lieregulin / neu differntiation factor , pox virus growth factors; betacellulin and epiregulin (Prigent and Lemoins, 1992).The EGF-R was initially isolated from the A 431 human squamous carcinoma cell line (Cohen et at., 1982.
