Abstract A great confusion may be established abouf the nature of the parotid swelling. The due to successful management of a parotid swelling is to attain the nature ofauch swelling. Swellings affecting the whole gland are usually due to inflammatory or obstruc¬tive lesions. Those forming a lump in the gland are usually neoplas ticinnature. Inflammatory swellings of the parotid may be acute or chronio. Acute parotitis may be due to mumps or acute suppurative parotitis. Chronic parotitis may be due to chronic reolnrent parotitis, chronic sialolithiasis, duct strioture or granuloma tons lesions of the gland. Neopltstic lesions of the parotid may be benign, malignant or tumours of vlriable malignanoy. A series of investigations may be required before adopting the proper treatment. Such investigations include simple radiography slalorraphy, hropsy and radionuclide acation Lng. |
