Abstract The peritoneum is the serosal membrane lining the walls of the abdominal and pelvic cavity and in¬vests the contained viscera. There is a potential space between these two layers and this form the peri- toneal cavity. Peritonitis is an inflammation of this serosal membrane The inflammation may be acute or chronic , it may be septic or aseptic primary or secondary and finally, may be localised to one area of peritoneal cavity or diffusely involve the whole peritoneal lining . Aseptic peritonitis is caused by a non-bact¬erial cause, is usually chemical and occurs as the re¬sult of contact with various juices, bile, pancreatic, gastric or blood. Extrinsic substances can also cause chemical peritonitis, example of this include starch and talcum powder. Septic peritonitis may arise directly or as a result of infection superimposed on an a septic peritonitis. |
