Abstract

This study included 28 patients with cancer rectum ( 12 males and 16 females) in a trial to evaluate the role of CT and MRI in diagnosis and preoperative local staging of cancer rectum. The peak age incidence was 50 to 70 years. The most common clinical presentation was bleeding per rectum while the least one was intestinal obstruct ion. Patients were evaluated by barium enema examination, CT and MRl. Findings were correlated with operative data and pathological findings. Barium study is highly useful as a preliminary diagnostic aid of cancer rectum and highly accurate in localization of the site and longitudinal extension of the tumor. The distension of the rectum with air together with Buscopan injection helped better delineation of the rectal mass. The majority of cases appeared by CT as a homogenous mass of soft tissue density while by MRI the majority of cases appeared hypointcnse on T I WI and hyperintense on ’1’2 WI. Some tumors exhibited heterogenous S.1. on ’1’2 WI due to presence of fibrous tissue at histologic examination. Others exhibited hyperintense signal on T 1 due to necrotic tissue with fluid of high protein content.
