Abstract
The feasibility of surrounding the breast with a coil to put it for MR imaging and the differences of the histologic, biochemical and physiologic behaviours of the different breast tumours has encouraged the investigators to use MRI as a problem solving modality to differentiate malignant from benign diseases. Aiming at demonstration of the MRI appearance of different benign and malignant breast lesions and evaluation of the role of MRI in their diagnosis, we studied 38 cases, with palpable breast masses or suspected mammographic abnormalities, by MRI using pre and post contrast techniques. All malignant lesions showed enhancement; the majority (22 out of 23 cases) had early enhancement (within the first 2-4 min). Thirteen cases showed >90% increase in SI and 9 cases had 75-89% increase in SI i.e. 96% of the cases showed more than 75% increase of SI after LV. Gd injection. Non of the malignant lesions showed no enhancement. Most benign lesions (13 cases out of 15) showed enhancement, however, they had lesser degrees and rates of enhancement. Eight cases (53%) had more than 75% increase ofSI and only one case showed more than 900/0 increase of SI after Gd injection. Only 3 cases (out of 15) exhibited early rapid enhancement.
