Abstract

Myasthenia gravis IS a potentially debilitating and life threatening .disease for which thymectomy had been proved to be very beneficial ameliorating the symptoms and even stopping the progress of the disease. Thymectomy should be performed as soon as the patient is diagnosed Every myasthenic patient should have CT chest examination, preoperative plasmapheresis 1-2 weeks preoperatively if severly symptomatizing. Postoperative ventilatory support is of a great help in severe cases and tracheostomy is a must if more than 7-10 days of ventilation is planned. Better results could be obtained by intimate cooperation between the neurologists and the cardiothoracic surgeons in the pre and postoperative care of those patients. Diagnostic facilities (CT chest, EMG and good neurological examination) should be at hand. Plasmapheresis unit is to be supported both financially and technically. Pathologic examination of the thymic tissues should be done for every resected thymic tissue to detect any thymomas. Anticholinesterase drugs should be supported and should be available to encourage the patients to continue their treatment both pre and postoperatively.
