Abstract The present work was carried out on male albino rats, to study the influence of physical training on the sensi¬tivity of different types of skeletal muscles to insulin in normal and streptozotocin diabetic rats. physical tra¬ining was done in both normal and diabetic rats by swimming every morning till exhaustion for two weeks. The tested muscles include; soleus (slow-oxidative), red gastrocnemius (fast-oxidative-glycolytic) ,white gastrocnemius (fast-gly¬colytic) and extensor digitorium longus (mixed), represen¬ting different types of muscle fibers. In this work gl~cose uptake, and lactate and pyruvate release by different skeletal muscles from the hindlimbs of rats, were determined in normal-sedentary, normal-tra¬ined, diabetic-sedentary, and diabetic-trained rats, both in absence and presence of insulin, added in two different concentrations; a physiological concentration (100 uU/ml) and a maximum concentration (10 mU/ml). The cell cytopla¬smic (NAD+)/(NADH) redox potential in the tested muscles was calculated from the pyruvate/lactate release ratio from each muscle. |
