Abstract Serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-C, HDL-C, apo Band apo A-I were studied in 29 patients with nephrotic syndrome. Their ages ranged from 1.2-12 years; 22 were males and 7 were females. In addition, 12 healthy children matching the patients as regards age and sex were studied. The patients were dividied into 2 groups: , Group A: Consisted of 20 patients in relapse. Group B: Consisted of 20 patients in remission. 11 patients were studied serially in the 2 stages. Serum concentration of total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-C and apo B were significantly elevated, while serum levels of HDL-C and apo A-I were insignificantly lowered in relapsing nephrotic patients compared ; to control. Patients presenting during the 3rd attack had the highest levels of serum apo B as well as serum apo B containing lipids compared to control and patients during the 1 st or 2nd attack. No significant difference ,was noticed in serum apo A-I levels between patients when grouped by the order of attacks. Remission of nephrotic syndrome was associated with significant reduction in serum levels of apo B as well as apo B containing lipids, meanwhile serum apo A-I increased to normal levels. Hypoalbuminemia may be responsible for these changes in lipid metabolism. During remission, serum total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL-C were still higher than control, while serum HDL-C, apo Band apo A-I did not significantly differ from control. |
