Abstract

This study was done on 150 clinically diagnosed specimens, in addition to 33 biopsies taken from tissues as control. Fresh tissue blocks were taken from the surgical specimens immediately after their excision and processed :- Frozen sections : They were stained for adenosine triphosphatase, alkaline phosphatase , acid phosphatase, non specific esterases, lactic dehydrogenase and gly¬cogen. Paraffin sections They were stained by hematoxylin and eosin, alcian blue and periodic acid schiff. They were used for histopathological and mucins stUdies. 1- Histopathological StUdy The tissue sections were examined for changes in tumour cells and the stroma. Management tumours: ArchitectUral changes All types of carcinomas examined showed abno architectural patterns in the form of irregular sheets or abnormal shaped acini. Cytological ohanges malignant oells showed the following changes : - Cellular pleomorphism: Tumour oells showed variable degrees of pleomorphism ranging from mild to marked degrees. - Cytoplasmic changes : Basophilia was the predominent cytoplasmic colour of the malignant cells. It was seen more in the undifferentiated carcinomas. Intra¬cytoplasmic contents such as keratin and mucin were seen in some carcinomas. These contents were reduced on going towards undifferentiation. - Nuclear changes: Nuclear pleomorphism was proport¬ional with cellular pleomorphism. However, it was more diagnostic than the latter. The nuclei appea¬red mostly hyperchromatic and irregular in outline. They were large in size and the nuclear - cytoplasmic ratio was mostly increased. Frequent mitoses were seen in most cases.
