Abstract

Our study was performed on 52 patients with closed displaced extension type supracondylar fractures of the humerus. The age ranged between 20 months and eleven years with a mean age of 4.83 years. Males were affected in 65.38 percent (34 males) and females represented 34.62 per cent of cases. The left elbow was affected in 41 patients (78.85 percent). Thirty two cases (61.54 ’percent) were Grade II and 20 patients were Grade III. Two cases of our series were complicated by nerve affection in the form of neuropraxia, one of them was associated with radial nerve affection and the other was associated with median nerve affection. There were no associated skeletal injuries in our series. After initial radiological examination and according to the degree of displacement and type of displacement we planed the mechanism to correct the deformity. The Baumann angle was measured on the X-ray of the injured side with accepted reduction. Also the Baumann angle and the carrying angle on the normal side were measured. All patients were hospitalized for at least 24 hours to observe the peripheral circulation. After removal of the slab they were left to do excercise untill full extension of the elbow was obtained. Baumann angle also was measured one week after reduction and on removal of the slab. After complete extension of the elbow at the end of follow up .
