Abstract

The supracondylar humeral fracture is the most common fracture of the elbow in children. The displaced supracondylar fracture is a most challenging injury to treat. Although many methods of treatment were described in the literature for this fracture, no one method is suitable for all fractures. The aim of this work is to study the results of treatment of recent displaced supracondylar fractures of the humerus in children by : - Closed reduction and posterior slab immobilization - Closed reduction and traction (Skin and skeletal traction). - Closed reduction and percutaneous pinning. - Open reduction and internal fixation. We reviewed the anatomy and Biomchanics of the elbow joint, the pathology, management and complications of supracondylar fracture of the humerus. Our study included 220 patients with 220 recent displaced supracondylar fracture of the humerus in children. The age of maximum incidence of fractures was between 8 and 10 years of age (35.5%). The youngest was 4 years and the oldest was 12 years. There were 148 males (67.3%) and 72 females (32.7%) , The left side was affected in 134 cases (60,9%) and the right side was affected in 86 cases (39.1 %), There were 210 extension type fractrus (95.5%) and 10 flexion type fracture (4.5%) The study included 77 type - II fractures (35%) and 143 type -III fractures (65%). Regarding the mechanism of injury; in 145 injuries the fractures were due to fall on the outstretched hand in 5 cases the injury .
