Abstract

Prostaglandins are 20-carbon polyunsaturated fatty acids, derived from prostanoic acid. The biosynthesis chain accomplished by the enzyme complepa synthetase that ists in almost all mammalian tissue. pas have been implicated in the physiologiC regulation of different events in the reproductive system In mammals. Some data indicate that PBs may play an important role in the .egulation of ovarian function especially with regard to ovulation and luteolysis. Also, It seems probable that pamay participate in the process of ovum transport and nidltion All intrauterine tissuS can synthesize pas The capcity for synth.sis increases at term, particularlY in the decidU. and fetal mambrans Ther is general greement that PBs are Involved in the initiation of Labour In all mommals, although the source of pas and the mechanism of stimulation of their production varies between species. pas have also been implicated in the pathophysiolOgy of some disorders of pregnancy e.g pregnancy induCed hypertension. The recentlY formulated hypothesis that. deficiency in Prostaeyclln (PBI2) production or epreion, might be implicated in the pathOqeneslS of preeclampsiai finding increasing support.
