Abstract

In recent yearS there have been major advrolces in the monitoring and control of labour. Tradi tionally, paturition is subdivided into three stages although in reality these compromise a continous process. The first stage of labour continues up to full cervical dilatation, the second stage finishes vdth complete expulsion of the baby and the third stage is invo1ved with separation and deli very of the placenta and membranes. Because the average risks of spontaneous parturihan are conaf dered by many to be too great to be acceptable, considerable efforts have been made in recent years to promote low risk obstetric situation. Ideal labour m&lagement requires not only an appreciation of the events occuring at the cellular level in the uterus but also a means of quanti tating the uterine activity precisely. The myometrium shares IDBlly of the attributes smooth muscle in general but displays certain properities, these are largely restricted to the reproductive smooth muscles.
