Abstract Retrospective analysis of 228 patients with malignant pleural effusion registered in Radiotherapy and Cardiothoracic Surgery Departments of Mansoura University Hospital during the period 1974-1988 inclusive. The relative frequenCY incidence of malignant pleural effusion to all malignancies recorded during this period was 3.9%. 110 cases were males with age range from 3-83 years and with mean age 52.5±15.9 years, and 118 cases were females with mean age was 50.5±13.9 years and age range 7-75 years. The male to female ratio was 0.93:1. Breast cancer was the most frequent primary tumour in our cases constituting 32.5% of the cases, followed by bronchognic carcinoma (31.6%). Lymphomas, leukaemias and ovarian tumours represented 19.2% of the cases reviewed. Left sided pleural effusion was more frequent than right sided effusion (52% versuS 44%) . Most of the patients were presented with dyspnea and chest pain & less frequently with cough and haemoptysis.
