Abstract Menstrual disturbances were noticed in psychiatric patients especially, those who had mental illnesses. Neuroleptics and ECT have the same effect when used in treatment of those patients. In accordance endocrinal changes present may be due to disturbance of hypothalamo-hypophyseo-gonadal axis of those patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the mental illnesses, neuroleptics and ECT on basal plasma FSH and in turn on the integrity of hypothalamo-hypophyseo-gonadal axis. The study comprised twinty four female patients and eight control volunteers. Our patients include 12 chronic schizophrenics, in respect to the length of illness, and 12 psychotic depressives. All of them were diagnosed through a careful psychiatric and psychometric assessment using Mental Status Examination Record (MSER) for schizophrenics and 21-item Hamilton Rating Scale (HRS) for depressives. The diagnosis of schizophrenia and depression was based on the criteria described by the Diagnostic Manual of Psychiatric Disorders (DMP-I). |
