Abstract

r In this study 100 patients with various hepato- biliary disorders were selected from El-Mansoura Univer- sity Hospital; ?5” were males and 15 were females. Their age ranged from 20 to 66 years. These patients were divided into the following groups: 1. Ascitic group: This group comprised 60 patients with ascites on top of hepatic cirrhosis and / or fibros~s; 51 were males and 9 were females. 2. Non-ascitic group: --------- ~ This group compriaed 40 patients; 34 were males . and 6 were females. The liver and spleen were found to be enlarged in all patients. 3. Patients with ruptured oesophago-gastric varices: This group comprised 59 patients with varicial bleeding on top of hepatic disease. - 80 - :Ii SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS This study comprised 24 patients with hepatosplenic bilharziasis, 4 were ascetic, 7 were sUffering from rup¬tured oesophageal varices and 13 patients were nonascitic nonbleeder. 20 normal persons served as control group. The subjects of the present study were divided into the [allowing gr?ups: ~’-~~_I: Control group: This group comprised 20 normal control persons. 3 were females and 17 were males with age ranging from 18 Y - 70 Y. Cr_~II: Patients with bilharzial hepatic fibrosis and ruptured oesophagogastric varices: This group comprised 7 patients, 1 was female and 6 were males with age ranging from 19Y - 63Y. The spleen was hugely enlarged in 5 cases and moderately enlarged in 2 cases. The liver was enlarged in 6 cases and shrunken in 1 cases. All thise cases were non ascitic. Group III: Patients with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis (non-bleeders): This group comprised 17 patients with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis, 1 was female and 16 were males with age
