Abstract

The aim of the present work was to study the impact and natural course of amyloidosis on kidney transplantation. Sixteen kidney transplant recipients with amyloidosis were included in the study in whom amyloidosis was diagnosed by renal biopsy. Out of the sixteen amyloidotic recipients, eleven had amy¬loidosis secondary to familial Mediterranean fever, while in the rest amyloidosis was primary as no evidence of preceeding or co-existing disease were detected in them. All the amyloidotic recipients were given oral colchicine (1-2 gm/day) once the diagnosis of amyloidosis was established and maintained on this drug indefinitly. A control group of 46 renal allograft recipients in whom end¬stage renal failure was secondary to unidentified etiology was selected randomly from the transplant registry filed by date of operation. The two groupS were comparable with respect to age, sex, duration of transplantation and the immunosuppressive regimens used. All the kidney donors were living and related except in one amy¬loidotic and four from the control group, they were emotionally related. However, the donor in both groupS were homogenous regarding age, sex and the degree of HLA matching. The two groupS of recipients were compared as regarding serum creatinine concentration, ciclosporin dose, frequency and time of.
