Abstract The aim of this study is a trial to find the incidence of Helicobacter Pylori in patients with portal hypertension presented . with ruptured oesophageal varices and if H.Pylori can be considered as a factor in precipitating ruptured oesophageal varices. The study was conducted on 72 patients (63 males and 9 females) with age ranged between 33-75 years (mean: 74.01). All were presented with haematemsis and/or melena due to ruptured oesophageal varices, and 30 normal persons as a control group (26 males and 4 females) with age ranged between 32-55 years (mean: 45.06). All of them were subjected to thorough history taking, clinical examination and the following investigations. Some liver function tests (serum albumin, bilirubin, SOPT and prothrombin time), abdominal ultrasound, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, detection of H.P. infection using the rapid urease test and serological detection of IgG anti-HP, and serum gastrin and amylase levels.
