Abstract Contact system of coagulation has been thought to contribute in inflammatory reaction in arthritis. However, its precise role is not well determined. So, this work was done to evaluate the levels of prekallikrein and coagulation factor XII in cases with arthritis . In the work reported here’, the occurrence of contact activation was studied in 22 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), in addition to 24 patients complaining of osteoarthritis (OA). Twelve normal person were taken as control to evaluate the accuracy of the analysing data. Coagulation factor XII was found to be significantly higher in RA group compared to OA and control groups. It also showed high positive correlation with ESR values and the degree of clinical activity in RA patients. Although FXII was detected in nearly normal concentration in OA patients, yet its synovial fluid concentration is significantly higher in cases with~OA. On the other hand, prekallikrein mean percentage concentration was significantly lower in both RA an OA compared to the control group. Also, it showed no correlation with the disease activity or ESR values in either group. |
