Abstract

Fasting during the month of Ramadan is one of the five fundamental requirements of Islam. It provides researchers with a good opportunity to study experimental hunger. Upper gastrointestinal bleeding, due to either ruptured oesophageal varices or bleeding peptic ulcers, is one if the major health problems in Egypt where schistosomiasis and hepatitis are prevalent. It results in great morbidity and mortality despite the different therapeutic options. The aim of the present study was to detect the effect of fasting on upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to either ruptured varices or bleeding peptic ulcer. The study was conducted on 211 patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding admitted at the unit of Haematemesis, Mansoura Emergency Hospital. The patients were divided into 2 groups: Group 1: Comprised 101 fasting patients (86 males and 15 females) with ages ranged from 23-80 years. Group 2: Comprised fasting patients (94 males and 16 females) with ages ranged from 20-76 years.
