Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate serum cholecystokinin level in bilharzial hepatic patients and correlate these levels with gall bladder abnormalities and function in these patients. The study comprised 25 patients having hepatosplenic bilharziasis with age ranging from 20 to 60 years, and 10 healthy subjects of matched age and sex as control group. The total group of patients were sub grouped into 2 subgroups according to the presence or absence of criteria of liver cell failure- the subgroup without liver cell failure (10) and the subgroup with liver cell failure (15). The bilharzial nature of hepatosplenomegaly was based on history of previous bilharzial infestation, clinically by the presence of hepatosplenic bilharziasis. manifestations of portal hypertension as splenomegaly, oesophageal varices, caput medusa, venous hum and ascites, laboratory by: (urine & stool analysis and rectal snip) and ultrasonic picture of periportal fibrosis. Patients with recent gastro intestinal bleeding, hepatic encephalopathy were excluded, no drug treatment for at least 2 weeks before the study, systemic infection, patient with autonomic neuropathy as diabetes mellitus & chronic renal failure, chest and cardiac troubles, prolonged fasting, obesity and pregnancy were excluded from the study.
