Abstract The material of the present study comprised 36 patients with idiopathic mitral valve prolapse; 24 females and 12 males. Their age ranged between 7-33 years [mean 19.14 years] and 20 normal volunteers as control; 14 females and 6 males. Cases were selected from the echocardiographic unit of department of medicine in Mansoura university hospital. Patients were referred on the basis of idiopathic causes after exclusion of rheumatic fever, tonsillitis and/or rheumatic mitral valve disease, and chronic chest disease. The diagnosis of MVP was made on the basis of clinical examination, electrocardiographic, radiologic and echocardiographic evaluation. All patients had sinus rhythm. Patients were excluded from this study if any of the following was present; history ’of rheumatic fever, tonsillitis, congestive heart failure, systemic hypertension, patients with chronic chest disease, and patients with clinical and/or echo cardiographic criteria of other cardiac diseases. Cases were classified into (2) main groups; Total test group (36 cases) and normal control group (20 subjects). Total test group is further classified according to the severity of mitral valve prolapse into subgroup. |
