Abstract •Three age groups of rabbits (two weeks, two months and two- to- Ithree years) were used in this study. Each group consisted often [rabbits; five of them were used for histological study and the other live for histochemical study. The animals were anaesthesized, jintraperitoneally, with sodium pentabarbitol (35 mg/kgm body weight)and perfused with neutral buffered formalin. Then paraffin sections from each cardiac chamber and interventricular septum of each animal, were prepared for the histological study. They were stained with; hematoxylin and eosin, phosphotungstic acid Ihematoxylin, Mallory, Van Gieson’s, Verhoeffs and PAS stains. [Fresh frozen sections were prepared for the histochemical study of [succinic dehydrogenase and acid phosphatase enzymes. The diameters of cardiac myocytes, in all age groups, were measured tad subjected to statistical analysis. The different cardiac chambers revealed macroscapical and microscopical differences in all age [roups of the studied rabbits. Macroscopically, adult and senile rabbits had larger sized hearts i young rabbits. Microscopically, many developmental changes were seen in the wall of the heart. The elastic fibres; (only identified with Verhoeffs stain), and also the collagenous fibres, in the endocardium, were increased in adult than young rabbits. The |
