Abstract

Androgenetic alopecia is a common and perplexing clinical problem in the female. It is either presented with diffuse hair loss, (female pattern baldness) or patterned loss simulating that occurring in men (male pattern baldness) . Our study is a new experience added to evaluate the androgenic state of female patients with androgenic Twinty five female patients with hair loss (eleven with male pattern baldness and fourteen with female pattern baldness) attending the outpatient clinic of Dermatology and Venereology Dep . , Mansoura University Hospital were interrogated thoroughly for exclusion of other causes of hair loss e.g. telogen effluvium, post par turn hair loss, or hair loss secondary to drugs or contraceptive pills. They were examined thoroughly and investigated for sources of androgen excess as polycystic ovary, supra renal or pitutary tumour by radiological examination. They were also investigated for free testosterone and SHBG in the serum and 17 ketosteroid in urine.
