Abstract

The present investigation aimed to study the effect of compost, chemical and biofertilizers, when added to sand medium, on growth and flowering of geranium and periwinkle plants. Two pot experiments, one on geranium plants and the other on periwinkle, were carried out at the Experiment Station and Laboratory of Vegetable Crops and Ornamental Plants Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Mansoura University during the two seasons 2003/2004 and 2004/2005. Each experiment consisted of 37 treatments. According to the obtained results from this research, we can conclude the following: Addition of compost from green waste to sand medium at the used rates increased plant growth, flowering and chlorophyll content of geranium and periwinkle plants. Application of urea formaldehyde coated urea and rock phosphate as a slow release fertilizer at all rates showed more increasing in plant growth, flowering and chlorophyll content of geranium and periwinkle plants when compared with the obtained results from application of urea and superphosphate as a soluble fertilizer at the same rates. Application of biofertilizer with soluble or slow release chemical fertilizers increased plant growth, flowering and chlorophyll content of geranium and periwinkle plants. However the increasing effect of biofertilizer was better with the used slow release fertilizer than with the soluble one.
