Abstract

Five species of Egyptian marine algae, of Chlorophyta (Ulva lactuca and U. fasciata) and Rhodophyta (Pterocladia capillacea, Corallina mediterranea and Ahnfeltia gigartinoides) collected from the Mediterranean sea and Suezcanal have been screened for their content of antimicrobial (antibacterial and antifungal) compounds. Different organic solvents have been used to extract these compounds. Also, we studied the environmental conditions that affect the production of these compounds including physicochemical conditions of seawater and abundance of heavy metals. Fatty acid composition was also examined. Algal extracts were used to control some plant pathogenic fungi including Botrytis fabae, the causative agent of chocolate spot disease of Vicia faba. Finally, preliminary studies were done to identify the chemical nature of these bioactive compounds.
