Abstract

The coastal sand dunes of El BurullusBaltim contain several important and strategic economic minerals: ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile, zircon, monazite, garnet and magnetite. Estimation of minerals resource and production of these economic minerals with acceptable grade and recovery are the main targets of the present study. Also the environmental impacts related to sand mining operations and production of the economic minerals have been attempted. Ninety two boreholes were drilled by NMA in El Burullus<U+2013>Baltim sand dunes with a total penetrated depth of 1632 m. Borehole depth ranges between 534m and with averages 17.74m. El Burullus<U+2013>Baltim sand dunes contain 113.87 x 106 m3 raw sands with average bulk density 1.73 g/cm3. So, the total economic mineral resource in El Burullus<U+2013>Baltim sand dunes is about 10.43 x 106 tons. The investigated area of El BurullusBaltim sand dunes contains 197 million tons of raw sand. Mineral evaluation indicates that the examined sand deposits contain 5.29% economic minerals. The life time of mining is 15.6 years. The mass balance for El Burullus<U+2013>Baltim sand dunes project also takes in consideration the grade and recovery of the individual economic minerals. With a mining rate of 12.6 million tons raw sand per year it is expected to produce about 584.232 tons of economic minerals. The annual production of the economic minerals (in thousand tons) in is predicted as: 21,76 magnetite, 433,3 ilmenite, 28,23 altered ilmenite, 13,2 leucoxene, 29,95 garnet, 42,37 zircon and 14,07 rutile. The proposed project for mining sand dunes of El Burullus<U+2013>Baltim deserves comprehensive and detailed study concerning the environmental impact assessment (EIA) before mining.
