Abstract

This work reviews the properties of tunnel diodes, and presents the theory and application of tunnel diodes to a srlf-oscillating converter. A designed model tunnel diode converter produced a conversion loss of dbs and a noise figure of 10 dbs. These figures are inferior to those obtainable from a tunnel diode mixer and comparable to those obtainable from the usual crystal mixer. However, this self-oscillating tunnel diode converter eliminates the need for a separate local oscillator. This is an important advantage since it reduces the space occupiedby the converter and presents a certain cost saving.
