Abstract Designing of flexible pipeline embedded in soil requires consideration of both stresses due to internal pressure and stresses due to loads imposed on the pipe by trucks passing over the pipeline. In order to provide experimental data for evaluating the problem of flexible pipeline crossing, an extensive series of tests were in which representative external loads and internal pressure were applied both simultaneously and individually. The strain – gage data on tested pipes were examined for inconsistent readings. Such readings were corrected where possible. Strains were converted to stresses which were plotted on working graphs. Data from the working graphs were then used in analysis of stresses produced by internal pressure, external loads, interaction between stresses produced by simultaneous application of internal pressure and external loads. The analysis led to definite observations and certain conclusions according to the specific results outlined whichever available in the present study. |
