Abstract

Chronic destructive periodontal disease continues to be a major dental probIem. Study of the underlying pathogenetic mechanisms have provided.•devidences that prostaglandin E2 is the principle biochemical mediator of periodontal disease destruction in humans.
The use of various NSAlD for treatment of experimental and clinical eriodontitis have been tried and found useful in several studies.
In the present study , the propionic acid derivative flurbiprofen has been tried by a topical application for 15 patients with adult periodontitis of moderate to severe degree as indicated by various indices of periodontitis.
The patients were subjected to topical application of flurbiprofen 3 times weekly over a period of 6 Ms.
This was accompanied with regular scaling and root planning to prevent plaque reaccumulation which can help growth of pathogenic bacteria.
Radiological assessment of bone resorption as well as the response of therapy was carried out every 3 Ms. until the end of the study time after 6 Ms.
In our study, Flurbiprofen was found to be effective in reducing pocket depths and gingival inflammation allowing gain of attachment.
Flurbiprofen was found to prevent further bone rescrption as assessed by radiographs.
Topical application of flurbiprofen allowed avoidance of side effects of systemic dosing and irrigation of deep pockets and the diseased gingiva.
