Abstract
The present study deals essentially with the type and distribution of the contimental shelf sediments west of Ras El - Barr. The area under investigation extends for about 50 km from Ras El - Barr westwards along the Mediterranean coast of Egypt. Within this area, seventeen near - shore profiles extending in the sea to a depth of six meters below sea level were sampled twice in 1974 and 1975 by the coastal protection research project.The bottom samples were kindly provided by the project for this particular study. 119 samples were collected in 1974 and 121 samples in 1975. Variation of the bottom sediments distribution with time and the marine conitions controlling it have been taken into consideration.
