Abstract

The human hepatitis C virus (HCV), a member of the Flaviviridae family. HCV is characterized by high degree of nucteotide sequence variability ”quasispecies nature of viral population” enable them to escape from host immune response. HCV causes sever liver disease and represents a major health problem worldwide with an estimated 5 million infected individuals in Egypt i.e. more than 16% of the population. The infection takes a chronic course in about 70% of the infected individuals. HCV causes an indolent and slowly progressive liver disease that is asymptomatic untill the development of decompensated liver disease including cirrhosis and, often, liver cancer.
