Abstract The catalyst used in this study of the esterification is a hydrogen from of a cation exchanger of the type Amberlite IR-120 with a capacity of 6.84 meq./gm of a completely anhydrous resin. The effect of the structure of organic acids and the aliphatic alcohol on the esterification rate was investigated using Taft’s equation. A kinetic expression was proposed, to determine the reaction velocity constant k1, and the esterification of formic, acetic, propionic, butyric and valeric acids with a homologous series of alcohols (methanol, ethanol, propanol and butanol) was found to be a second order bimolecular reversible reaction. |
