Abstract
The work described in this Thesis has been undertaken with the primary objective of preparing some new 6-methylpregnane compounds from the steroid sapogenin, which is used as hormone precursor. The introductory section of this thesis comprises a comprehensive account of the sapogenin class of steroids. The constitution of the sapogenins is discussed with special focus on their stereochemistry and their various methods of degradation are given. A list of the different known sapogenin compounds is reported.
