Abstract A general survey is given for the work done in the field of solvent effects on reaction rates and mechanisms. The effects of the selective solvation, hydrogen bonding, solvation, ionisation, internal pressure or cohesion, external pressure, viscosity and dielectric constant of the solvent on the reaction rates and mechanisms are reviewed. The diolectric constant effect has been discussed in the light of the electrostatic theories. |
