Abstract

Abstract
Background: COVID-19, a disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has had a profound impact on global health and longevity, with severe cases more prevalent among healthy children and those with chronic conditions .The virus can also influence the nervous system, resulting in neurological symptoms and cognitive impairment. After recovery, patients may experience depression and a reduced quality of life. The pandemic has also significantly affected children’s mental health due to factors such as social isolation and parental fatigue.
Objective: The goal of the referenced work is to comprehend the psychological effects of COVID-19 on children and the changes in their quality of life after recovery.
Patients and methods : A cross-sectional study was conducted from April to October 2022 to examine the psychological impact and health-related quality of life in 104 children following recovery from COVID-19. The study included patients aged 7-18 years who had clinically recovered from COVID-19, excluding those with pre-existing psychological or developmental disorders. Valid Arabic version of CRIES-13 and PedsQL were used to assess the psychological impact.
Results The study provides insights into the severity of COVID-19 among children and its psychological impact. It shows that 70.2% had moderate cases, 19.2% severe, and 26.0% required hospitalization by PCR testing and according to MOHP Case definition in COVID 19 classification. Clinical recovery duration varied, with 67.3% recovering in less than 3 months. The study also highlights the psychological impact, with 81.7% of children having severe depression and 44.2% moderate anxiety. The CRIES-13 scale indicated significant P -Value (0.001) post traumatic stress among children. The PedsQL questionnaires, children aged 5-7 who recovered in 2 weeks to 3 months had a higher median total score than those who took more than 3 months to recover, indicating a better quality of life. Notably, non-hospitalized children had less post-traumatic stress and better quality of life. These findings underscore the need for psychological support for recovering families.
Conclusion: The study highlights the key factors impacting the mental health of children with COVID-19. The study’s limitations include potential bias and limited generalizability. Recommendations include more diverse research, exploring additional risk factors, and developing interventions to support affected children.
