Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate thedentoalveolar and skeletal changes of anterior open bite (AOB) treatment using extrusion arch in the mixed dentition. Materials and methods: The study included 12 patients (7 females and 5 males) in the mixed dentition stage with an age range from 8 to 11 years with dentoalveolar anterior open bite ≤ 0 mm with normal facial pattern SN-GoGn (31.54°) and insufficient incisor display. After leveling & alignment for the upper incisors, a sectional heavy wire of 0.017 x 0.025’’ stainless steel was kept in the upper incisors’ brackets. The extrusion arch was placed as an auxiliary arch made of 0.017 x 0.025’’ TMA wire till the correction of AOB. Lateral cephalograms were recorded before (T0) and after the AOB treatment (T1). The paired sample t-test was used to investigate differences between T0 and T1. The P value was significant at P ≤ 0.05.
Results: Extrusion arch has closed the open bite in all patients. A significant increase in the overbite (+3.73mm), a significant decrease in the overjet (-1.50 mm), a significant retroclination of the upper incisors (-9.58°), and a significant mesial inclination of the upper molar (+1.44°) have been noticed but there were no skeletal changes.
Conclusion: Extrusion arch is efficient in dentoalveolar AOB treatment. It closes the bite mainly through extrusion and retroclination of upper incisors.
Keywords: Open bite, extrusion arch, mixed dentition.
