Abstract
The present study attempts to investigate subtitling as a mode of Audiovisual Translation (AVT). Subtitling has become indispensable in the era of multimedia and cultural exchange. The study attempts to focus on the subtitling of culture-specific items between the Egyptian Colloquial Arabic source text and the English target text. The aim is to show how subtitling strategies function to convey the various types of culture-specific items, and the constraints that affect the subtitler’s choices. To this end, the analysis builds on the five-domain classification of culture-specific items proposed by Newmark (1988) and Gottlieb’s parameters of subtitling (1992). The corpus selected for the analysis consists of two Arabic films: /Sʕiraaʕ fil Miina/ (Dark Waters) (1956) and /al-ʔArdʕ/ (The Land) (1969). The qualitative analysis of the Arabic films under investigation and their English subtitles yields the following outcomes: Firstly, Gottlieb’s subtitling strategies maintain communicative meaning in more than 50% of the examples under investigation. Secondly, various culture-specific items and language varieties lead to an apparent variation in the application of Gottlieb’s strategies, with two strategies being more frequently employed than others. Finally, the study demonstrates that Newmark’s classification of culture-specific items encompasses a significant part of the aspects of Egyptian Arab Culture.
